What is an eSIM, and how does a travel eSIM work?

Simvaya team · · 2 min read

An eSIM is a SIM card that is built into your phone instead of being a small plastic card you push into a tray. It does the same job: it tells a mobile network who you are, so your phone can use data on it.

What makes a travel eSIM different

A travel eSIM is a data plan for the country or region you are visiting. You buy it online, install it by scanning a QR code or tapping a link, and switch it on when you arrive. Your normal SIM stays in your phone, so you can still receive calls and texts on your usual number if you want to.

Why travellers use them

  • No roaming surprises. You pay for the plan up front, so there is no bill waiting when you get home.
  • No shop to find. You are online the moment you land, without hunting for a local SIM at the airport.
  • Keep your number. Your home SIM stays where it is.

Does my phone support eSIM?

Most recent iPhones, Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones do, as long as the phone is not locked to a carrier. Check your model on our supported devices page before you buy.

Next steps

Find your destination on the destinations page, pick a plan, and install it at home over Wi-Fi before you fly.
